Verisyse™ Phakic Intraocular Lens (IOL)

San Francisco, Bay Area, and San Jose, California

The Verisyse™ phakic IOL is provides you with a highly effective method to correct moderate to severe myopia. It is an excellent option if you are not an ideal candidate for more traditional refractive procedures such as LASIK or PRK.

The Verisyse IOL supplies your eye with an additional lens to focus light onto your retina. Since it is a phakic IOL, your eye’s natural crystalline lens remains in place. This greatly facilitates your ability to adjust to objects at varying distances, since this is one of the primary functions carried out by your natural crystalline lens.

Am I a Candidate for the Verisyse Lens?

At your initial consultation, San Francisco ophthalmologist Dr. Gary Kawesch will conduct a thorough eye examination to determine the best method to correct your refractive error. Ideal candidates for the Verisyse lens procedure:

  • Have healthy eyes
  • Do not have a disease or abnormality of the iris, pupil, or cornea
  • Have myopia which is correctable with lenses ranging from -5.0 to -20.0 diopters
  • Have astigmatism of 2.5 diopters or less

The Verisyse IOL Procedure

The Verisyse IOL procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and takes roughly 15-30 minutes to complete. Dr. Kawesch generally recommends treating one eye at a time.

A local anesthetic will be used to numb your eye and eliminate any potential pain. Dr. Kawesch will make a small incision in your cornea and place the Verisyse lens in the space between the iris and cornea. He will make sure the IOL is centered in front of the pupil. In order to hold the lens in place, it Dr. Kawesch will then attach it to the iris. You will most likely need to wear a protective shield over your eye for several days in order to protect it during the healing process.

Your Verisyse IOL will rest directly in front of your eye’s natural lens. It works by refracting light rays so that they focus more clearly on the retina. The vast majority of Verisyse IOL patients experience excellent results, and you will most likely not require corrective lenses after the procedure. Approximately 90% of Verisyse IOL patients experience vision of 20/30 or better.
