Questions About Visian™ ICLs

San Francisco, Bay Area & San Jose, California

The mission of Dr. Gary Kawesch and his associates is to provide the highest level of care to patients seeking eye care. To meet that goal the eye surgeons at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley offer a full range of refractive correction surgeries, including intraocular lens implants. One of two FDA approved brands of phakic intraocular lenses (P-IOL) is the Visian™ ICL, which offers some unique advantages over other procedures.

What Advantages are Associated With the Visian™ ICL?

Visian™ ICL is manufactured using collagen, which is biocompatible, making it easier to implant, less likely to cause inflammation, and is similar in makeup to the natural crystalline lens allowing it to transmit light more naturally.

The Visian™ ICL biocompatibility features have properties that prevent proteins from collecting on the lens, keeping it, and your vision, crisp and clear.

This phakic intraocular lens also contains a UV blocker adding another degree of protection.

Because the Visian™ ICL is anti-reflective it produces clearer vision and less glare, halos and night vision aberrations.

The ICL is inserted through a small slit made in the cornea, and can be removed, leaving your eyes as they were before surgery.

The Visian™ ICL is a safe, outpatient procedure, requires a short recovery time; and has few post op complications.

Is the Visian™ ICL Better Than LASIK?

Studies showed that patients with high myopia had higher-quality outcomes with the Visian™ ICL than those treated with LASIK, and fewer higher-order aberrations resulted from ICL implant surgery.

One big advantage of the Visian™ ICL is that the procedure is completely reversible. It does not involve removal of any corneal tissue or disturbance of epithelial cells.

Qualifications  for Visian™ ICL candidacy are less restrictive than for laser surgery procedures, also.

Is the Visian™ ICL Implant for Everyone?

Unfortunately, no. Patients should be at least 21 years old, and ideally well under 45 years old. By your mid-40s your eyes begin to develop presbyopia, and later will develop cataracts. The Visian™ ICL is designed to correct severe myopia and is not helpful for these two disorders.

To find out if you are better suited for LASIK or Visian™ ICL implants please contact Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley for a personal no-cost consultation with an experienced laser and implant surgeon.
