Questions about Monovision LASIK

San Francisco, Bay Area and San Jose, California

Usually the first sign of age is pinpointed in our vision, or lack of vision. Sometime around our mid-forties we suddenly need reading glasses or longer arms. This is the result of the eye’s lens losing its elasticity, making it more difficult to focus at close distances. In the past, different glasses were required for different distances. Now, many are finding that LASIK monovision is a better option to help you see near and far without glasses

Is Monovision LASIK safe?

More than one million Americans elect to have LASIK surgery each year and even those who aren’t entirely satisfied, are glad they had the procedure. Monovision correction is relatively new, but with monovision LASIK, the results are equally satisfying, if it’s the right fit for the individual. When you contact an eye surgeon like Dr. Craig Bindi at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley, you can discover more about monovision and then learn what to expect from monovision LASIK vision correction.

Can I throw away my glasses if I choose Monovision LASIK?

Depending upon what time in your life you choose to have monovision surgery largely plays a part on when additional reading glasses will be needed later in life. Like all things, change is inevitable, so when you have your vision corrected with monovision, the effects of aging may necessitate reading glasses on down the road.

Will Monovision LASIK allow me to see at any distance?

Your vision is comprised of three distances, which include:

  • Close distances
  • Middle distances
  • Far distances

If an eye surgeon tells you that he or she can restore all three distances in your vision, you should grab your car keys and hit the door. Only two distances can be corrected, but not all three. Eye surgeons can correct your distance vision then adjust your vision for computer distance. However, as you age, you’ll find that you’ll need reading glasses for anything up close.

Should I choose Monovision contacts or surgery?

Refractive surgery is best for those individuals who are mildly hyperopic or have never needed glasses. Surgeons will create a small amount of myopia in your non-dominant eye, thus altering your cornea slightly. This myopia will allow near vision while the other non-corrected eye will allow for distance vision. The correction lasts for years, but will diminish over time, necessitating the need for reading glasses at some point. To test whether the more permanent surgical option is right for you, it’s best to do a trial with monovision contacts.

What are the monovision drawbacks?

You will find a few disadvantages with monovision, though the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks. With monovision, you may have reduced depth perception unless corrective lenses are used to fully correct the myopic eye. You may also find that night vision is a bit more difficult and that headlights flare into rings.
