Ophthalmology Sub-Specialties

San Jose, Pleasanton, Bay Area, & San Francisco, California

Ophthalmology is a much broader field than it might seem at first. Like most medical doctors, ophthalmologist Dr. Gary Kawesch concentrates his practice in a few of the sub-specialties within the main specialty of ophthalmology. Likewise, associates Dr. Bindi and Dr. Chern specialized in refractive and corneal surgery, and Dr. Chern did further work in prevention of childhood blindness. By narrowing their scope of practice, ophthalmologists offer a greater degree of experience in specific areas of treatment, giving you the best experience possible.

Through continuing education and advanced training Dr. Kawesch and his associates stay abreast of advancements in ophthalmologic practice areas as well as the other sub-specialties in his field. Doing so enables them to spot signs and symptoms of disorders or diseases that may require unanticipated treatment a referral, or to advise you against a procedure for which you might otherwise appear as a good candidate.

These sub-specialties are areas that ophthalmologists study and practice after completing a three year residency. According to the American Association of Ophthalmologists the sub-specialties include diseases and disorders involving:

  • Cataract and Anterior Segment
  • Refractive Management and Intervention
  • Corneal and External Disease
  • Oculoplastics
  • Glaucoma
  • Neuro-Ophthalmology
  • Ocular Pathology and Oncology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology Including Strabismus
  • Retina and Vitreous
  • Uveitis

Ophthalmologists perform surgery, treat mediCalifornial conditions, administer medication including anesthesia (with additional training) and administer other forms of treatment.

Ophthalmology Practice

Though qualified to practice in all of the above areas Dr. Kawesch has extensive experience with refractive procedures such as LASIK and other laser surgeries, and non-laser procedures such as implants and cosmetic ophthalmology. Not only are laser surgery procedures now acceptable for athletes, Dr. Kawesch performs all the laser surgery for the Bay Area Raiders and San Jose Sharks, players whose vision is critical to their careers.

Cataracts, though not a refractive disease, are treated with a lens exchange. Artificial lenses are also used to correct some refractive errors, so it is only natural that Dr. Kawesch treat cataracts as a regular part of his practice.

Demand is high for cosmetic ophthalmology as well. As we age our vision as well as our facial muscles and skin tend to deteriorate gradually. Cosmetic ophthalmology is beneficial both to improve appearance generally as well as for improving appearance after functional surgery, such as tumor removal, drooping eyelids and other medically necessary surgeries.

When you need an ophthalmology specialist to bring your vision to the best or to improve your appearance with or without glasses please contact the experienced ophthalmologist Dr. Gary Kawesch of Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley, serving San Francisco, Bay Area, San Jose and Pleasanton, California.
