LASIK Myths/h1>
San Francisco, Oakland & San Jose, California
Relatively speaking, LASIK is a new and exciting procedure used for vision correction. Most people have heard something about LASIK in the last few years. Unfortunately, much of what you hear is incorrectly reported, exaggerated, or just plain false. Here are some of the top LASIK surgery myths and the myth-busting details to refute them.
LASIK is not real surgery
Although not as risky or invasive as other surgeries, LASIK is a surgical procedure and should be considered carefully. As with any surgery, there are risks and complications involved and some people may not be good candidates for surgery. When deciding on LASIK surgery, it is important to find a skilled physician to minimize the risks and complications as much as possible.
LASIK is unsafe
As previously mentioned, there are risks involved with LASIK surgery, but every procedure contains certain risk factors. As a highly trained specialist, Dr. Gary Kawesch and his team work diligently to screen you to ensure that those risks are minimized. While no surgical procedure is 100 percent guaranteed, it is far from being considered an unsafe or risky procedure. In the U.S., approximately one million people undergo LASIK vision correction each year.
LASIK always works
At the opposite end of the spectrum is the myth that LASIK always works in all cases when it is performed. This is obviously not true either. As mentioned before, not everybody is a good candidate for LASIK vision correction. Dr. Kawesch can evaluate your specific needs and let you know ahead of time of the possible complications and expectations for your particular case. While we want you to be completely satisfied with your procedure, the most satisfied patients are those with realistic expectations of the outcome.
Everybody can benefit from LASIK
LASIK is not for everybody; you may be a good candidate for LASIK surgery if you meet the following general criteria:
- You are over 18 years old
- You have stable myopia of less than 10 diopters
- You do not have any eye disease like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy
- You have a stable prescription
- Your corneas are sufficiently thick
- You are not pregnant
LASIK is too new to trust
Surprisingly, LASIK surgery has been around since 1992 and millions of people have experienced improved eyesight since that time. New techniques and technologies are making LASIK safer and more effective than ever before. If you are considering LASIK surgery, you want to seek a skilled physician like Dr. Kawesch, who has performed more than 40,000 refractive procedures.
