IntraLase Laser

The IntraLase laser with femtosecond technology is the first of its kind to allow a blade-free flap creation during LASIK. In the first step of the LASIK vision surgery procedure, your eye surgeon must create the corneal flap, meaning he must lift up the top layer of the cornea (the epithelium) in order to access the inner cornea for the laser reshaping process. Before bladeless LASIK, surgeons used an instrument called a microkeratome to cut the epithelium and create the corneal flap by hand. IntraLase bladeless LASIK allows your surgeon to complete this step with absolutely no cutting involved. Instead, the IntraLase laser uses sophisticated technology to gently create a very precise corneal flap. The corneal tissues are carefully targeted and separated in a safe and painless process called photodisruption. After your LADARVision corneal reshaping, the flap is moved back in place and allowed to heal without stitches.

With IntraLase, the corneal flap step is customized to each patient as the Wavefront mapping system communicates the amount of corneal tissue to be removed to the IntraLase laser. The precision of IntraLase laser also allows some patients with thin corneas to have LASIK.
