LASIK and Dry Eyes
San Francisco, Oakland & San Jose, California
Vision correction with LASIK technology is one of the most sought-after medical treatments today. Adequate moisture in the eyes is a primary consideration for undergoing LASIK surgery because dry eyes is one of the most common side effects of LASIK.
Evaluation
The presence of an adequate amount of tear film on your eyes is one of the prerequisites for undergoing LASIK surgery. Dr. Kawesch measures the amount of tear film using a variety of sophisticated tests. If not diligently tested, low eye moisture can affect the mapping of your eye and may lead to inadequate measurements. Once the tear film is determined, Dr. Kawesch can better decide which options are best to get the optimum outcome. In some cases, treating dry eyes prior to undergoing surgery can improve your chances of a successful result.
Causes
One of the primary causes for dry eyes both pre- and post-LASIK is the medication you are taking. During your initial consultation, your current medications will be closely evaluated for this and other reasons. Genetics, previous trauma, and other causes may also contribute to chronic dry eyes, which can be treated so that you can continue with your plans to improve your vision.
During surgery, the laser or the blade used to create the corneal flap may cause damage to nerves that stimulate the lacrimal glands to produce tears. Eye dryness typically lasts only for the first few days or weeks after surgery as the tissues repair themselves and get back to normal.
Treatment options
Depending on your exact needs prior to surgery, the eye doctor may advise the following treatments to improve the moisture level of your eyes.
- Moisturizing drops to supplement your natural tears
- Punctal plugs that block tear drainage, leaving more moisture in the eyes
- Prescription eye drops like Restasis, which help you produce more tears
After surgery, treatment options include:
- Liberal use of moisturizing drops
- Punctal plugs
- Plenty of rest
