LASEK and PRK: Safety and Effectiveness

Both LASEK and PRK offer clear and natural vision to patients with higher degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Both procedures are considered to be very safe and effective at reshaping the cornea to fit your individualized needs.

Both procedures have the advantage of eliminating flap-creation complications. However, because of the epithelial removal techniques used, patients can expect a longer healing process than is typical with LASIK. Dr. Kawesch will discuss the discomfort levels and healing times with you and let you know what you can expect with PRK and LASEK.

Because the two procedures differ slightly in their treatment of the epithelium, there are unique risks that will be addressed during your consultation. Complications of both can include dry eyes, halos, blurry vision, poor night vision, and the need for enhancements. While some patients will be able to achieve equally great vision results with either procedure, Dr. Kawesch may recommend either LASEK or PRK as the better choice after a thorough eye evaluation.
